Some assumptions we make (I have to eat) are obvious.

Other assumptions we make may have been good at the time but may no longer be valid (I must not write in a text book).

Making assumptions is great because they allow us to think more quickly, the down side is that they constrain our thinking. Things which are obvious to you may not be obvious to other people or may not be correct at all and even questioning assumptions that are ‘correct’ may lead us to new ideas.

Some might be:

  • We have to compete with other companies
  • This is the way that we have always done it
  • If I do X then Y will happen
  • etc.

Write down some of the assumptions that you make in your life.

Ask yourself why you make these assumptions.

Try dropping some of them and see what ideas this generates.
